Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex

A Gateway to Engineering

Unlimited Opportunity for Discovery: Only at The Ohio State University

The College of Engineering’s new Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex (BMEC) is being built to capitalize on our momentum and gains in education, research, innovation and economic well-being. With the first phase complete, the vision for the entire project is beginning to take shape. The signature piece of BMEC — what will clearly be the Gateway to Engineering at the university — is its second and final phase. A unique component of the BMEC vision is bringing together the college’s highly ranked programs in advanced materials — from the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Ohio State will be the first university in the nation to maximize collaborative learning and research by transforming the architecture of our engineering campus.

Faculty and students from these areas and others across campus will come together in new collaborative spaces. They will work with cutting-edge engineers in the heart of our campus. First-year students will be drawn into “teaching labs of the future” from the day they arrive on campus, giving them rich, hands-on, virtual and hybrid learning experiences and problem-solving skills. When complete, BMEC will spur new ways of conducting research, new improvements to human health and new partnerships to advance Ohio businesses.

Through the innovation occurring in BMEC labs, lives will be saved and improved, not only in Ohio, but around the world. And substantial sectors of Ohio’s economy — such as semiconductors — will gain through bolder collaborations with industry. From medicine to business to arts and sciences and beyond, the university’s cross-campus collaborations fuel large volumes of world-leading research — more than $1.2 billion in FY21 alone. We partner in robust ways with companies to help solve their challenges. In fact, both the university and the College of Engineering rank third nationally in the amount of industry-sponsored research they conduct.

The College of Engineering has developed deep distinction in research and education, with our undergraduate and graduate programs now ranked first in Ohio and 16th among public universities nationally. Enrollments of well-prepared students are growing in quantity and quality, along with broad recognition that STEM education is one of the surest paths to personal prosperity and a vibrant economic future

The $150 million, 248,000 square-foot Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex is fueled by sizeable investments from the State of Ohio and The Ohio State University — and from philanthropic support from our loyal network of alumni, corporate and industry partners, and friends of the college and Buckeye nation.
