Buckeyes employed at Dow Chemical locations in Michigan celebrate their win in an online auction for United Way that earned them the right to fly the Scarlet and Gray at two work sites. Employees in the photo who are chemical and biomolecular engineering alumni include Tom Burns, ’83 and M.S. ’85 (with wife, Lynn); Rich Brandon, ’83 (with wife, Beth); Lindsay and Dave Michalski, both 2002 alumni; and Katie Fischer, ’02.Thanks to loyal and giving alumni, the Ohio State flag is flying proudly at Dow Chemical locations — in Michigan, no less.

Chemical and biomolecular engineering alumnus Tom Burns, ’83 and M.S. ’85, a research and development director at Dow, rallied fellow Buckeyes working at the company during an online auction to raise money for United Way. Dow promised that the winners could fly their school colors at Dow Chemical’s Corporate Center and at their Michigan Division and Manufacturing Plant in Midland, Mich.

Burns even contacted area alumni who didn’t work at Dow and convinced them to support United Way in the auction. He then submitted the winning bid just as the bidding window was about to close to earn the Buckeye alumni the prize of flying the Ohio State flag during Beat Michigan Week.
