2009 Engineering Alumni Awardees Share Words of Wisdom

Posted:

Burn Jeng Lin, the 2009 Lamme Medalist, shares a moment with Stuart Collins, an electrical engineering faculty member who was Lin’s thesis advisor at Ohio State. This year’s College of Engineering alumni awardees included graduates from 1950 through 1990; entrepreneurs; academicians; community service leaders; business consultants; and national and international experts in fields including agriculture, semiconductors, oil refining, aerospace and military engineering; and honorees from as far away as Wales and Taiwan.

“You are all very important to our future as we strive to be the best engineering college and continue to educate, and more importantly graduate, ‘true winners’ in our field,” Interim Dean Gregory Washington told the alumni.

The awardees shared Ohio State memories and words of gratitude during the ceremony. Here are some of their gems of wisdom and reminiscence.

John “Jack” Diamond: “I remember this George Bernard Shaw quote: ‘I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live.’ For all of us here at Ohio State, time will show how firm thy friendship, Ohio.”

Andre Ezis: “I was recently at a museum where I saw the Latin inscription, ‘What man is a man who does not make the world better?’ It reminded me of Dean (Donald) Glower and Professor (Robert) Rapp,” Ezis said, explaining that those faculty members often had entrepreneurs teach courses. “I sat through a couple of those and said, ‘Hmm, I can do that.’”

Warren Johnson: “I grew up in central Ohio, in Upper Arlington. You roll across the river and you find yourself in a really big world of Ohio State. It was my first step in going global — and I travel the world in my job now.”

Keynote speaker Peter L. Scott, ’49 EE and Distinguished Alumnus, 1986: “I hope every OSU graduate will think back about how they got where they are today and how, by giving back, they can help current students reach the goals in their lives we would want them to do.”

A summary of this year’s awardees follows. Read more details about all the awardees online. Nominate someone for an award by contacting the chair of your department or a faculty member.

The Benjamin G. Lamme Meritorious Achievement Medal
The Benjamin G. Lamme Meritorious Achievement Medal, the College of Engineering’s most prestigious award, is present annually to a technical graduate for meritorious achievement in engineering.

Burn Jeng Lin, ’70 Ph.D., EE, of Hsinchu, Taiwan, is a senior director at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd., a semiconductor foundry renowned for advancing state-of-the-art wafer processing. A National Academy of Engineering member, Lin is considered the leading pioneer in the field of microlithography, the creation of submicron patterns on semiconductor chips. He was the first person to create a computer program to simulate partially coherent projected images from arbitrary 2-D patterns, which led to numerous breakthroughs including the invention of exposure defocus diagrams, and the first person to present the concept of deep-UV lithography. His work is a major reason that Taiwan Semiconductor is a leader in its field.

Texnikoi Outstanding Alumnus Award
Each year the active membership of Texnikoi selects one of the younger alumni of the College of Engineering as a recipient of the Texnikoi Outstanding Alumni Award: this award is based upon their achievements since graduation, as evaluated in light of the objectives of Texnikoi.

Daniel L. Wieczynski, ’90 ME, of Wales, has spent his career with ExxonMobil, where he is now working at the South Hook Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal, Europe’s largest LNG terminal, in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He previously was pipeline project manager for the company’s Adriatic Liquid Natural Gas Terminal in Italy and was responsible for the construction of a 40-kilometer pipeline from the world’s first offshore liquefied natural gas receiving terminal to the Italian natural gas grid. As the leader of ExxonMobil’s Ohio State engineering recruiting team, Wieczynski enjoys returning to campus to interview talented engineers for a career with his company. He is active in the United Way Young Leaders program and American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is a strong supporter of the Scouting movement.

2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards
The Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize achievement of alumni in the fields of engineering or architecture by reason of significant inventions, important research or design, administrative leadership or genius in production.
