The Ohio State University College of Engineering will host several events in celebration of National Engineers Week, February 19-25.

On Monday, February 20, female high school students in ninth and tenth grade come to campus for WiE Explore, a one-day engineering exploration event. WiE is the acronym for Women in Engineering. During WiE Explore, participants will engage in a series of interactive, hands-on activities aimed at exploring various engineering careers and technology of the future. Participants will team up with Ohio State female engineering students to learn about how engineers improve lives. The program will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the science and engineering neighborhood of Ohio State’s Columbus campus.

In recognition of both Black History Month and National Engineers Week, the college’s Office of Diversity, Outreach & Inclusion will host a lecture by special guest Karl Reid, executive director for the National Society of Black Engineers. Reid will present, “A Grand Challenge: Understanding Why Diversity Matters from an Engineers Perspective” on Wednesday, February 22, from 1-3 p.m. in Scott Lab E100. Reid will also discuss the 50K Coalition—a national initiative with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) to graduate 50,000 diverse engineers by 2025.

On Wednesday, February 22, welding engineering Assistant Professor Carolin Fink will speak to sixth and seventh grade girls about why engineering is a great career choice for women. The presentations are part of a COSI-sponsored series on women in STEM-related fields.

To cap off the week, the college will host a STEM Challenge for middle school students on Saturday, February 25 at noon. The day will feature activities and presentations that introduce engineering careers to approximately 100 middle schoolers. The event is a collaborative effort sponsored by the following student organizations: NSBE, SHPE and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
